Case Study: Over 70? Still entitled for Breast Screening!
Over 70? Still entitled for Breast Screening!
Cancer is the leading cause of premature deaths (under 75 years old) across England. As GPs we wish to detect cancers early - so that means encouraging screening for those without symptoms.
Every woman registered with a GP will receive her first invitation to attend for a mammogram at her local breast screening unit sometime between her 50th and 53rd birthdays. In some areas, the first invitation could be at 47. She will then be invited every three years until her 70th birthday. By 2016, women should be routinely invited up to the age of 74. What many people don’t know is that women over 70 years of age are more at risk of getting breast cancer than younger women. This is because the risk of getting breast cancer increases with age. About one-third of all breast cancers occur in women over the age of 70, so it is important to continue to be screened every three years. As the programme does not automatically invite women aged over 70 for breast screening, many women believe they are not at risk of breast cancer.
GPs can be a powerful influence between now and 2016 - we can tell our female patients over 70 that they have the right to be screened every three years.... All they need to do is phone the local breast screening unit to make an appointment.
NetworkLocum recognise the increasing dedication of GPs and locums in Women's Health and so have arranged a free CPD event on gynaecology and women’s health.
The event will be held at The Royal Society of Medicine on 10th April 2014. We'll have a speaker from within our GP community, as well as a consultant from Bupa.
There will be delicious snacks, wine, soft drinks and of course lots of other GP locums to meet and talk to. Not to mention the Network Locum (now Lantum) Team, who would love the opportunity to meet with any of our wonderful GPs. It’s also a great chance to earn some CPD credits and a certificate that can be used on your appraisal.
