Meet Dr Temi Oshin: Finding freedom and flexibility as a locum GP

After having her first child, Dr. Temi Oshin knew she needed a change. She wanted to keep doing the work she loved as a GP, but also have the flexibility to be there for her family.

That’s when she made the shift from her salaried GP role to finding locum work on Lantum. It’s a decision that has given her the freedom to shape her career around her life, rather than the other way around.

“I use Lantum to find new locum work all the time,” Temi explains. “It lets me plan my life around childcare, daily activities, and everything else. It’s given me so much freedom.”

Working on her own schedule

Locum work has become an increasingly popular choice among GPs, with around 28% of all GPs in the UK working as locums, according to the NASGP.

The appeal? Flexibility, variety, and the chance to build your career on your own terms. But it’s not without its challenges—organising shifts, dealing with paperwork, and making sure you’re paid on time can sometimes feel like a job in itself.

For Temi, though, Lantum has made it easy to manage her career. “Sometimes I realise, okay, I’m not doing anything tomorrow and childcare is sorted. I open the app, look at the location, pick the one that works best for me, and that’s it,” she says. “A lot of the time, I’ll get a message from the practice thanking me for applying. It’s really simple.”

This simplicity and control are exactly what drew Temi to Lantum in the first place. “I refuse to work for an agency. They sell a lot of dreams, but it’s just a front to push you into doing what you don’t want to do. You definitely don’t feel like you’re in control.”

In contrast, Lantum has given Temi the reins. Whether she’s looking for a few extra shifts to fill her week or needs to plan around her family, the platform lets her choose when, where, and how much she works. “It’s completely opposite, night and day,” she says of her experience with agencies vs Lantum.

Rocketpay: "It makes life a dream"

One of the biggest game-changers for Temi has been Rocketpay, Lantum’s next-day payment service.

“I think Rocketpay is the best invention known to man! I’ve done locum work before where I’ve had to wait almost two months to get paid. It was so frustrating that sometimes I didn’t want to go back to a practice, even if I’d had a great experience there.”

With Rocketpay, that stress is a thing of the past. “Now I know I’m getting paid the next day regardless. It makes life a dream.”
